英语是国际交往的工具，信息传播的媒介，人类友谊的桥梁，世界文明的融合剂，因此，英语教学对于世界上任何一个国家来说都是重要的。英语教学在中国有近二百年的历史，研究的著作和论文比比皆是。关于母语在英语教学中的作用，外语教学界一直存在两种截然不同的观点。一种是过分夸大目的语教学，忽视母语作用。另外一种是认为母语在外语教学中扮演一个十分重要的角色，并且应该贯穿整个外语教学。本文在述评国内长期针对沐浴在外语目的语教学作用争论的基础上，提出了母语对英语教学既有积极的一面，也有消极的一面。在英语教学过程中，教师必须用联系的、动态的眼光看待和处理母语，才能有效地提高教学质量。
